Intentional Retirement

The term retirement can provoke a wide range of feelings and visual imagery. Whether you look forward to it, dread the idea, or haven’t given it much thought, keep reading. This transition in life can be transformed into an opportunity!

What do we mean?

Retirement encompasses various interpretations. Here, we’re referring to the transition from active work into a different stage of life.

Five years ago, Colleen ended her career as a respiratory therapist and anesthesia assistant. Initially, she hesitated at the thought of stepping away. With guidance from close friends, introspection, and time, she came to understand that retiring was not the same as quitting; it was merely a step toward new experiences!

Transformation Ahead!

Retirement can bring about numerous changes, such as:

  • alterations in income levels and sources
  • changes in job titles
  • modifications in daily activities
  • restructuring of daily routines

Moreover, the following shifts might occur simultaneously:

  • labels evolving from middle-aged to senior or elder
  • weakening or fading of social and support networks
  • physical bodies becoming older and slower to recuperate
  • shifts in family dynamics

There’s a lot happening all at once.

The Broader Picture

Most cultures witness individuals retiring partially or entirely at some stage in their lives. In Canada, the median retirement age is 63 for public sector employees and 67.8 for self-employed individuals. Current statistics indicate that this median age is rising compared to earlier data, meaning that more people are choosing to retire later.

Influential Factors

When contemplating retirement, many begin by considering financial aspects; however, our physical and mental health, alongside our societal involvement, are equally crucial.

Physical Health

This could be an ideal time to set a health benchmark by getting a comprehensive health evaluation. With the insights gained from check-ups and follow-up tests, you’ll gain a clearer perspective on what aspects to monitor and which dietary and exercise programs may benefit you most.

Nutritional supplements can play a significant role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. With an understanding of your health status and existing risks, you can select targeted supplements. The aim is to stay fit enough to enjoy the activities you love now that time is on your side!

Emotional Health

Mental well-being is crucial as we grow older. Issues often encountered by older adults stem from feelings of loneliness, isolation, and a sense of lost purpose. These can heighten the risks of depression, substance misuse, anxiety, and undiagnosed conditions like dementia.

Many of these challenges can be reduced through proactive measures. Strategies such as confiding in a trusted friend, keeping in touch with your family doctor, participating in support groups, or seeking therapy can significantly improve your outlook.

Social Engagement

Having a close circle of friends, participating in activities, and staying mentally stimulated is essential for enhancing quality of life, particularly as you transition out of the workforce. Ensuring these areas remain vibrant can enrich your days and promote well-being. Owning a pet can also foster a sense of connection and responsibility.

Strategize Your Approach

Recognize your priorities and the means to accomplish them. During her retirement planning, Colleen identified five key areas that mattered the most:

  • maintaining cognitive sharpness
  • ensuring physical, nutritional, and sexual health
  • making contributions and being helpful to others
  • remaining engaged and mentally stimulated
  • enjoying the rewards of her labor

She pinpointed essential elements for her retirement and adhered to them, even during the pandemic. She now embraces her retirement wholeheartedly!

Make the Most of This Phase

Reflect on the potential advantages this stage could offer. There are strategies to navigate the challenges, along with unexpected benefits.

  • Be realistic—if change is imminent, prepare instead of resisting it.
  • Identify possible obstacles—develop effective responses.
  • Acknowledge your wisdom—leverage it for personal growth and to assist others.

Opt for a thoughtful planning process, execute meticulously, stay engaged, practice self-compassion, and be open to what surprises lie ahead.
