Friends laughing

Is it possible to greet a stranger with a smile and a simple “hello”? Such gestures present us with a wonderful chance to extend kindness to others and discover the remarkable nature of those around us.

You might recall the timeless film, The King and I, in which Deborah Kerr performs the enchanting song, “Getting to Know You,” directed towards the children she teaches:

In this melody, she conveys the joy found in sharing experiences with one another and reflects on the delight she encounters in familiarizing herself with her young learners.

One afternoon, while spending time with my granddaughter, Leia, I observed her approach a small group of adults conversing. With a gentle touch to her heart, she introduced herself, saying, “I’m Leia.” I was moved by her heartfelt attempt to connect, but unfortunately, the adults did not acknowledge her.

Children have a natural understanding of the significance of names. When I showed Leia pictures of two new horses, her first inquiry was, “What are their names?” Recognizing names is a crucial initial step in understanding an individual, even in the context of animals.

Taking this to heart, I decided to practice the art of greeting others. One day, as I entered a crowded elevator, I noticed a mother and her daughter. The girl bore a resemblance to Leia, prompting me to say, “Hello, my name is… What’s yours?” She provided her name, and her mother echoed it, allowing me to respond, “Nice to meet you.” The girl beamed at my acknowledgment! As I stepped out of the elevator, I wished them a wonderful remainder of the day. Interactions with younger people have taught me not to overlook them.

We can sometimes misjudge individuals based on their appearance or age, overlooking the chance to connect meaningfully. Every person possesses inherent value, and taking the time to get to know someone can be incredibly fulfilling.

On another occasion, while flying on a plane, I noticed the flight attendant seemed rather serious. I chose to remain courteous and follow her directions. Later, while visiting the restroom, I spotted her engrossed in a book. I approached her, greeted her, and expressed how pleased I was that she found a moment to read amidst her busy role. After acknowledging her challenges with the job, she shared her name and invited me to converse further, revealing her delightful personality.

Can making the effort to say “hello” truly impact someone’s life? Absolutely! The intent behind our greeting matters deeply. The way we reach out can reveal our character and convey respect. On that flight, expressing “hello” and sharing observations fostered mutual understanding.

Another experience came when I sat next to an older gentleman from Texas. After exchanging names, our conversation led to profound insights, especially when he shared that his daughter had a rare genetic condition. At just three, her spoken vocabulary was limited to “mom,” which remained unchanged as she grew. Despite her challenges, her parents continued to care for her, finding joy in activities like using an iPad or enjoying time on the putting green.

He also mentioned a younger daughter whose development was typical. A memorable moment occurred in a grocery store when the younger sister realized customers were confused by her older sibling’s condition. With courage, she approached them, introduced herself, and explained her sister’s situation, significantly easing the customers’ discomfort and allowing them to connect with her sister through understanding.

Understanding the circumstances of others can truly transform perspectives. A friendly acknowledgment lays the groundwork for connection. It can begin with a simple “hello” and an introduction, opening the door to deeper understanding. This approach has enriched my life in countless ways.

You might wonder, “Why should I make the effort?” It’s worth it to extend kindness to as many people as possible. Engaging someone in this manner demonstrates care and consideration. Taking the time to connect might reveal someone in distress whom you could support. Such interactions not only improve their day but also elevate our own spirits.

In a world where divisive narratives often overshadow our discussions, it can feel unjust to encounter negativity about various groups and cultures.

Moreover, getting to know someone over a Zoom call can prove challenging. Constantly being glued to our devices makes it difficult to appreciate others fully. Can we collectively prioritize genuine human interaction instead of our screens?

This year, 2025, let’s commit to learning as much as we can about those around us. It’s essential to respect the personal context of others, especially when time is limited to simply saying “hello.” However, a casual and sincere introduction can lead to discovering the beauty in each individual. So much unites us, and so much can be learned just by greeting someone.
