Orange Juice Biscuits
Orange Butter Sauce:
1 1/2 cups Florida Orange Juice
2 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Orange Biscuits:
1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons grated orange zest
2 cups bleached all-purpose flour, plus extra for kneading
1 2/3 tablespoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup whole milk
1/4 cup Florida Orange Juice
To prepare the orange butter sauce: Boil the orange juice for 5 minutes or until it has reduced by half. Stir in the butter until it melts, then remove it from the heat.
For the orange biscuits: Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Combine sugar and zest in a bowl, rubbing them together with your fingers until the sugar is damp and resembles wet sand.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar mixture, 2 cups of flour, baking powder, and salt. Use two forks or a pastry cutter to incorporate the shortening until it reaches a pea-sized consistency.
Next, combine the milk and orange juice, and mix it into the flour mixture to create a sticky dough.
Transfer the dough to a well-floured surface, sprinkle the top with more flour, and knead gently about six times, folding it over and adding flour as necessary.
Roll the dough to a 3/4-inch thickness and cut out the biscuits using a floured round cutter. Avoid twisting the cutter while cutting.
Arrange the biscuits on a baking sheet, placing them close but not touching each other.
Gather the scraps, knead them 2-3 times, and repeat the rolling and cutting process until all dough is used.
Brush the tops of the biscuits with the orange butter sauce and bake for 15-20 minutes until they are lightly golden.
Enjoy them warm or at room temperature accompanied by the remaining sauce.
