Remember when your mother told you to stay in the backyard until dinner? She recognized the benefits of the outdoors. Being immersed in nature not only keeps children entertained, but recent studies from healthcare professionals reinforce that it offers significant benefits for adults as well.
Nature as Prescription
In an innovative collaboration between Parks Canada and PaRx (A Prescription for Nature program), healthcare providers in Canada can now prescribe Parks Canada Discovery Passes, allowing patients to receive a dose of nature’s healing benefits.
With over 1,000 healthcare professionals now participating in this initiative, more individuals can gain access to this nature prescription. The program encourages practitioners to focus primarily on those who could gain the most from being outdoors, particularly individuals residing near national parks, historic landmarks, and marine conservation areas.
Understanding PaRx
Inspired by grassroots initiatives in the United States, Canada launched its first national nature-prescription program in 2020, initially starting in British Columbia. The aim was to enhance resource availability and accessibility, encouraging more people to engage with nature. By 2021, the program had expanded to Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
The foundation of the program is simple: spend at least two hours in nature each week, with a minimum of 20 minutes per outing, to unlock myriad health benefits. But there’s no need for a stopwatch—according to PaRx, you’ll know you’re reaping the rewards when you find yourself having a fulfilling experience, whether it’s enjoying lunch in a city park or biking through ancient forests.
The Healing Power of Nature
With approximately 450,000 square kilometers of national parks across Canada, there are countless opportunities to immerse yourself in nature. Notably, you don’t need a special prescription or direct access to those parks to benefit from the healing properties of the outdoors. Just a leisurely walk in wooded areas or time spent in urban green spaces can yield similar positive effects.
Among the numerous health benefits linked to nature are enhanced physical activity, boosted immune function, lower stress levels, and decreased risks of heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, exposure to natural environments can sharpen cognitive abilities, improving memory, creativity, and focus.
Beyond the physical advantages, spending time in nature significantly impacts mental well-being, helping to alleviate anxiety and negative thought patterns, elevate mood, and foster positive social interactions and a sense of fulfillment in life.
Benefits Beyond Us
Engaging with nature not only benefits individuals but also aids the environment. Research indicates that those who appreciate natural surroundings or spend time outdoors are more inclined to adopt eco-friendly practices, such as choosing sustainable options over fast fashion. So, take some time outdoors to enrich both your life and the planet!
