Sydney Dumler

During her high school years, Sydney Dumler didn’t engage in team sports, yet she longed for a community connection. To fulfill that desire, she turned to yoga and Pilates, finding them to be avenues for physical movement and societal bonding.

By the age of 18, her enthusiasm for yoga led her to pursue teacher training, which she completed before moving to Nashville for her college education. There, she contributed her expertise by managing and teaching at a local yoga studio.

Recognizing a gap in group fitness options in Tennessee, Dumler took the initiative to establish Forza Pilates in December 2023. In just a few years, her vision has blossomed into two studio locations, with plans for a third. While her love for Pilates is palpable, it’s her dedication to the community that is reshaping the fitness landscape.

The impact of positivity

The landscape of group fitness is evolving. Dumler observes a shift towards movement practices that enhance overall well-being rather than just physical fitness. “The increasing popularity of Pilates symbolizes this change,” she notes. While intensive workouts will remain available, the fitness industry acknowledges the demand for low-impact options. “People are seeking accessible routines that allow them to feel accomplished without overly exhausting themselves,” Dumler explains.

To make certain that newcomers feel appreciated and understood, she offers tours and provides a concierge-level service. Her studios are designed to exude warmth and comfort, emulating a home-like atmosphere, and she prioritizes hiring approachable staff who contribute to a welcoming environment.

Inclusive fitness for all

Accessibility in fitness extends beyond just offering low-impact classes and creating inviting studio settings. It also requires an inclusive program. Dumler facilitates sessions suitable for all participants, utilizing modifications as needed. “All our classes cater to various levels, guiding individuals based on their personal goals,” she shares. “Our instructors are equipped to provide options for each exercise, adjusting difficulty as necessary.”

Fostering a body-positive language and creating secure environments are vital to building an inclusive fitness culture. Dumler recognizes that stakeholders appreciate the difference in their experience when participating in a supportive setting. “People are more aware of the importance of environment,” she states, emphasizing the necessity for instructors to avoid any toxic language.

At Forza, Dumler tailors class offerings based on the needs of her clientele. “We host monthly plus-size Pilates classes with a local influencer, providing relatable representation,” she emphasizes. “It’s crucial for individuals to observe others in the room who reflect their experiences and to feel safe and accepted.”

Furthermore, Dumler acknowledges the discomfort new parents may feel about returning to fitness routines. “Going back to the gym after having a baby can provoke anxiety, as many face guilt about leaving their child,” she explains. To counteract this, Forza provides a BYOB (bring your own baby) class, allowing new parents in Nashville to connect and maintain their health both physically and mentally.

The benefit of community

Working out in a group setting not only brings joy but also contributes positively to our health. Dumler recognizes that her clients enjoy lingering after class to socialize, enhancing their sense of community. “We regularly host fun community events,” she notes.

Research shows that individuals who participate in group fitness classes maintain their workout routines more effectively than those who exercise solo. The accountability of a friend or instructor can significantly motivate someone, making it less likely they will opt out of their workout.

Additionally, group exercise has been shown to be more effective in alleviating stress compared to individual workouts. Community connections are essential for healthy living, and such classes foster support, encouragement, and camaraderie, resulting in a more positive health impact.

Choosing what works for you

While group fitness programs are energizing and healthy, some may still feel apprehensive about joining. Dumler advises those hesitant individuals to begin with online classes from home. This approach allows them to familiarize themselves with the moves and terminology before stepping into a live class. “Eventually, muster the courage to join an in-person class equipped with some foundational knowledge; it can be very helpful,” she suggests.

It’s crucial to practice self-compassion and reframe your mindset. “Feeling intimidated is completely normal,” Dumler acknowledges. “I remember my own apprehension the first time I tried Pilates, but the key is to approach it with an open mind without applying too much self-pressure.”
