Many people do not realize that their cosmetic products can be breeding grounds for bacteria, yeast, and fungi. A recent study revealed that between 79 to 90 percent of makeup items contained potentially harmful germs. Beauty sponges were particularly problematic, with a staggering 93 percent of users admitting they had never cleaned them.
While the presence of germs in our beauty products is a significant issue, there are straightforward measures you can take to ensure they remain safe and hygienic.
- Always wash your hands before applying makeup.
- Keep cosmetics properly sealed when not in use.
- Clean cosmetic brushes weekly using a gentle shampoo.
- Rinse beauty sponges daily with warm, soapy water and allow them to dry completely.
- Refrain from sharing makeup products with others.
- Avoid applying makeup to broken skin, sores, or cracks.
- If you suspect an eye infection or notice redness around your eyes, refrain from using eye makeup until the area has healed.
- Request single-use applicators when trying out makeup products.
- Dispose of outdated makeup and tools.
- Store beauty products in a cool, dry environment.
