Natural Health: The Next Generation’s Next Big Trend

A recent study revealed that Generation Z is prioritizing health and wellness more than any previous generation. This is encouraging news, as it is widely recognized that the lifestyle choices made before age 26 can greatly affect long-term health. So, what factors are influencing this heightened awareness of natural health among younger individuals, and how can we enhance their positive engagement with the wellness sphere?

Gen Z Embracing Health Trends

The increasing focus on health within Generation Z is complex, according to pediatric dietitian Lauren Mahesri, RDN, LD. “They have unmatched access to information about natural health, making this a fresh perspective for teens and young adults,” she explains.

Dietitian Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD, highlights social media’s role in this trend. With TikTok boasting 1.5 billion users in 2023, much of its content is geared toward health and wellness, targeting the 13- to 24-year-old demographic.

Analogously, psychologists observe that Instagram users, notably those under 34, frequently engage with wellness and fitness topics, marking them as one of the platform’s most popular content types.

As Mahesri points out, it’s a multifaceted issue, with peer pressure, societal expectations, and body image concerns also contributing. Additionally, Mahesri notes that Gen Z is increasingly motivated by social justice and environmental issues, viewing natural health as a means to contribute positively to the planet.

Understanding Natural Health in Today’s Youth

“For many teens and young adults, natural health involves various dietary choices, herbal solutions, mindfulness techniques, and holistic lifestyle practices,” notes Dr. Monika Wassermann.

According to her, Gen Z is increasingly focused on preventive measures and self-care rather than simply addressing health issues as they arise. This shift is partly due to a growing skepticism towards traditional medicine, which often leans heavily on pharmaceuticals and invasive procedures. Moreover, young people are increasingly attracted to sustainable options that reflect their values around eco-responsibility and ethical sourcing.

This sentiment is corroborated by a global survey from Meta, revealing that Generation Z’s key priorities for 2024 prominently feature “maintaining health,” which encompasses nutrition and fitness.

Specific areas where Gen Z shows heightened interest in natural health include:

  • improving sleep quality, including the use of sleep supplements and tracking applications
  • wellness services and applications aimed at enhancing mindfulness
  • personalized health solutions, such as custom vitamins and supplements based on individual health metrics
  • strategies and resources for stress management and mental health improvement, including therapy
  • alternative recovery methods like acupuncture and massage therapy

Across these categories, interest from younger demographics exceeds that of most other age groups, indicating a trend that appears to be on the rise.

Encouraging Gen Z’s Interest in Wellness

The impact of social media and readily available information on natural health is twofold. While it spurs increased investments in wellness among Gen Z, it also presents challenges, as misinformation and incorrect health claims proliferate on these platforms.

“Parents can be instrumental by promoting educational resources and encouraging evidence-based practices,” Mahesri advises. “While there’s a genuine intent to learn about and practice natural health, the landscape is rife with misinformation, necessitating guided learning.”

Furthermore, it’s vital for parents to embody the principles of natural health themselves, as the younger generation closely observes our own health practices.

“Fostering open dialogue and modeling positive behaviors are crucial for promoting a healthy lifestyle,” Dr. Johannes Uys emphasizes. “Engage your child in discussions around natural health by sharing grocery shopping and cooking experiences or exemplifying mindfulness techniques during stressful moments.”

While the term “Greatest Generation” typically refers to those born around the early 1900s, in the realm of natural health, Gen Z might be transforming this narrative, and our collective support can help realize this potential.
