Skillet Apple Pie with Caramel Drizzle

By Culinary.net | Contributor

Although apple pie is often considered a classic fall dessert, this skillet variation introduces a delightful twist. To prepare, combine Honeycrisp apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice, then layer them between two pie crusts that simmer in a mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon. Finish it off with a drizzle of caramel sauce for a wonderfully indulgent dessert.

Skillet Apple Pie with Caramel Sauce

4 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

1/4 cup sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon, divided

1 tablespoon lemon juice

6 tablespoons butter

1/4 cup, plus 2 teaspoons brown sugar

2 refrigerated pie crusts

2 teaspoons whipping cream

Caramel sauce

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a large bowl, mix the sliced apples with sugar, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and lemon juice until the apples are well coated. Set this mixture aside.

In a 10-inch nonstick skillet that can go in the oven, melt the butter. Stir in 1/4 cup of brown sugar along with the remaining cinnamon, and bring it to a boil for about 5-8 minutes.

On top of the brown sugar mixture in the skillet, lay down one of the pie crusts. Spoon the apple mixture over this base, and cover it with the second pie crust. Make several slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. Brush the whipped cream over the crust and sprinkle with the remaining brown sugar.

Bake for 35-45 minutes or until the crust turns a golden brown.

Finish by drizzling caramel sauce over the top.
