Outdoor adventure for women

As many of us find ourselves spending extensive hours indoors, often glued to screens, the significant advantages of outdoor experiences are becoming more apparent. Engaging with nature is not just beneficial but essential for our well-being.

The beneficial effects, both physically and mentally, of exercising outdoors are universal. However, for women seeking more adventurous pursuits beyond a simple stroll in the park (which still has its own set of advantages!), obstacles can seem formidable.

Trish Van Haga, the visionary behind the outdoor community Women in the Wild Adventures, notes that common apprehensions regarding safety, event planning, and fitness levels frequently deter aspiring adventurers.

Nevertheless, Van Haga strongly believes that these concerns are manageable through proper knowledge, adequate planning, and, importantly, fostering community ties. She emphasizes that the rewards of overcoming both practical and mental challenges are as significant as the outdoor activities themselves.

A Grassroots Movement Gains Momentum

Van Haga, who has spent years exploring trails and slopes alone while yearning for a sense of community, decided to create a space where adventurous women of varying ages and experience levels could connect and empower one another. A former gymnast now working in forestry, Van Haga brings invaluable safety knowledge, excellent organizational prowess, and an infectious passion for outdoor activities.

What started as a small Facebook group for women to connect for hiking and snowboarding in the Vancouver area took a transformative turn when, in January 2024, a viral Instagram reel showcased highlights from their adventures in 2023. This viral moment catalyzed the formation of Women in the Wild Adventures into a lively community offering diverse activities, with event “Ambassadors” facilitating free events across Canada, the United States, and beyond.

Prioritizing Safety through Shared Skills

The concerns that women have regarding safety while considering outdoor activities are valid and important. “I prioritize safety and security very seriously,” shares Van Haga, starting with verifying the identities of all new members of Women in the Wild.

Future events are kept confidential, ensuring that only confirmed members have knowledge of the meeting locations and times (and it’s crucial to mention that this inclusive group welcomes anyone who identifies as a woman).

To empower women in enhancing their outdoor safety skills, Women in the Wild Adventures provides resources such as online courses, informative articles on topics like wilderness first aid and avalanche readiness, and recommendations for further safety training.

Creating Community in Nature

Adventure groups designed for women not only provide essential logistical support but also nurture a vital sense of community in our often disconnected society. Building these connections is a top priority for Van Haga, who has witnessed many friendships flourishing within her organization.

“When you venture into nature with a group like Women in the Wild, no matter the activity, you’ll experience a sense of togetherness,” Van Haga asserts, “enhancing both your mental and spiritual well-being.”

The Multifaceted Nature of Adventure

Adventure holds different meanings for different individuals. For some, it may be scaling steep rock faces or navigating through swift waters; for others, it might simply be enjoying a leisurely hike or paddling on a tranquil lake. The portrayal of an athletic climber at a mountain summit may inspire, but it hardly defines the vastness of outdoor adventure and the array of individuals engaged in it.

By stepping outside, whether to explore alone or share experiences with others, and embracing the spirit of discovery and connection with nature, you’re likely to uncover numerous, enriching rewards.
